Heads for a 302/Shifter change

I was looking for something to do that would be fun and a good way to increase power, when my friend suggested getting some new heads. He said trick flow ones were really could and would substantially increase the HP and tourque.

How tough is this gonna be and is it worth 1200 bucks? I have the money, thats not a problem, but obviously something cheaper i could do to increase HP and stuff would be cool.

Also... i just ordered the hurst speed stick, i can use that on an automatic trans mission right? I'm assuming its just a change out of the actually shifter and wont affect the tranny.

Thanks in advance!

Well I would say go for the 289 HP heads. They are closed cambered and will make higher compression. You can get them reworked for roller rockers and I'd put chevy valves in them because they are larger.... Cost me about $500 to have most of the work done, but I got the heads from a good friend who had like 8 sets just around in his garage.

If you go this way you need to make sure that you are getting the closed cambered heads tho, there were 2 sets that came out for the 289's.

yea 289 heads for a 302. my 302 has 289 hi-po heads on it. it produces higher compression.

Trick Flow heads will give you more potential in the long run than the 289 heads will. Your heads, cam, and intake are a package, and 289 heads work well with a basically stock engine, but if you ever decide to upgrade the rest, the Trick Flows will give you better gains.

yea i think he was suggesting buying 289 trick flows for the 302. you could even buy 351 trick flows for the 302 not sure what combo would be better

No he was talking about factory 289 heads. It's a common swap. there aren't different Trick Flows. They're just for all small block Fords.

I got a t-5. I never did a shifter swap on an auto.

With you heads, make sure you change the cam, carb and headers to match.

Well I was pretty much talking about $600 vs $1200. IF you got the money to throw at a set of trick flow heads then go right ahead, But I was talking about having a set of old heads reworked. I feel it's a better bang for the buck. Then again I don't make $20 an hour.

They are good heads. They are what I got, but if I have had the money I would of got some good aftermarket heads.

Which ones? I got my heads from a friend and got them reworked. I am guessing you have a 302. These heads would do your car some good.

Yea I think they would. I am young so I don't have all the best contacts for parts like that. Saddly all of the classic car guys around my neck of the woods are chevy guys and at least twice my age. I was wondering if there were any places on the net or any good parts catilogs where you could buy those 289 heads. I just got some scholarship money and that took nice bit of stress off of my bank account.

Do you have a shop around that will rework heads for you? I would go ask them if they have a set.

I do have a shop about 3 blocks away but I have never been there. What does a set usuially run for? I have been some places before to get a little work done here and there and some try to pull fast ones on me about the prices of parts because I am young, so I like to have a bit of backgroud info before I go in.

I am thinking about $500-$600 for the heads and all of the work done. Thats with the chevy vavles. You will have to get stiffer spings and roller rockers if you want them.
