restoring 1965 fastback
I'm finally restoring my stang. I've had it longer than I've had my husband so I'm really excited about it. It has been completely disassembled, dipped in acid, necessary body panels replace and dipped in e-coat. The next thing that has to be done is the undercarriage. What should I use? I want it to be protected but I don't like the look of the normal rubbery looking undercoat. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Candy

Thanks for your interest and replies.
I have a long long way to go and I'm sure a whole lot of questions. I will post pictures later as this project progresses. There's really nothing to show right now. As I said, the car is completely disassembled. It is not even a rolling chassis right now. I just got it from the metal stripper last week. The e-coat is really pretty cool. It has a sheen so you can see what bodywork is needed. It is a rust inhibitator that Nissan uses on all of their new cars. Supposedly, you don't have to worry about rust for about 50 years or so. I was so surprised at the dings and little dents that appeared after being completely stripped of paint and bondo. I'm going back to the original colors, black with red interior. The guy I have helping me with the restoration curses me daily for going back to black because he has to work harder on the bodywork, ha ha. It was a 289 2V car. I will probably beef up the engine a little and change to a 4 V carburator. I am NOT a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, I can tell you the difference between a sparkplug and a piston but that's about it so any suggestions guidance etc would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking of building the engine like a 289 Hi Po recreation. Does anyone have any thoughts on that? It is my understanding that I would probably have to modify my transmission (C4) and rearend to handle the extra power. Also considering putting in a fuel cell for safety reasons and will definately swap the front drum brakes to disc brakes. It has factory power steering, power brakes and airconditioning. Sorry to ramble I am just so excited. I can't wait until I'm driving my car again. Thanks, Candy |

It sounds great. I would say that because you are doing a A-1 job, that you should got back 100%. What are you going to do with your Mustang? It sounds like you are making a show car.

I would keep it stock. You can do little things like beef up the motor, but it needs to look stock.
