Modern Engine In A ClassicJust as a little info, I just bought a 2000 convertible with a 3.8 V6 for my son, and in looking for info about the car I found this website. I know the 2000 is not a classic, but the question I have deals with the classics. I really like the fastbacks from the mid 60's and was wondering if a modern day 302 would fit into one. I have an E150 ('90) with one and it has an AOD transmission. Would I be able to fit them into say a 65 fastback? Would the tranny be able to be used? How hard would the modifications if any, be to do? If they would be able to be used, since the engine is fuel injected would an external fuel pump be able to be used? I may be jumping the gun on this since I don't even have the fastback yet, but I appreciate any advice. Thanks, Vance |

You can use your AOD transmission if you want. Some guys on here have did the swap you are talking about. I got a T-5 in my 66 mustang, so if you want to go that you can.

4spd toploader FTW
![]() They're not as practical as a an AOD or T5, but they're cool, and fun as hell.

If the AOD is less than 32" overall length then you can use the stock drive shaft. Otherwise you will need to cut and balance the drive shaft.
You will also need a different flexplate, crossmember, block plate and Lokar cable for the throttle to use the AOD. You may also need to reroute rhe exhaust pipes.

I would suggest using high performance 5.0L (tubocharged EFI).
Get Ignition, computer (ECU) & wiring harness, trans (AOD, AODE) a 4R70W would be the best, fuel pump from doner car. It all works together. All will fit (with a little nudging) and parts are available. |

Classics with new technology!
Hey Guys!
I would like to add to this thread because I have a whole lot of experience with this swap. As long as you have a donor car you can use virtually everything from it to put into a classic 64 up till you get to the mustang 2 then it gets a little bit more complex! When you swap your modern 302 into the classic about the biggest issue you will have is the drive chaft and the oil pan, depending on the year of 302 you are using. I will tell you if you do this swap there is a lot of resources at your fingertips, if you have an issue you can ussually find a solution by calling someone like Tony Branda or just send me an email. I recently did a 4.6 modular with a Tremec TKO for the Gene Winfield gt690gw. debut at sema 2006 in the Barry Meguires Booth then shortly after that I engineerd a conversion for the V-10 triton with the 6spd BorgWarner trans. This was a very nice setup I have pictures, if you would like to see some of them then drop me a line. I also have a few on my myspace, but I dont go there often to update, I found myspace to be a big waste of time! I do encourage these mods just because its true hotrodding! yea I can restore them to be all original classics but there is nothing there that makes them unique. If ya need help let me know! |
