From Straight 6 To 289

I have a 66 with a straight six in it. I want to go with a 289, but a friend said it wouldn't fit well without hood mods. Any info? Thanks.

I went from a straight 6 in my 65 to a 302. you wont have to have any hood mods, but a list of what you will need...
v-8 front suspension
5 bolt lug hub for front, meaning spindle, backplate, and hub
new rear end with 5 bolt hub, 9 inch
possibly disc brakes, not a must, but nice to have

Well, as a follow up to this then, is you say no hood mods, but my 289 w/ edelbrock carb just barely fits under my hood, and the hood sits a little high. Is it cause the carb is higher than stock?

The hoods on most classic stangs stick up in the back because of the poor hinge design. If you run any intake that's taller than stock, it won't work.

org. doesn't leave much room and intakes, carbs, and airfilters can sit higher than stock. ive got a performer intake holly carb and elderbrock filter they barely fit but they do

A 289 will drop right in. I put a 351W in my old 65 years ago. It was an original 6 cylinder car. I left the 6 cylinder suspension and had no hood clearance issues. I ran a Victor Jr intake a 1" carb spacer. The car handled and drove fine. It was my daily driver for 3 years.

Can you please itemize a list you would recommend to build 'er up?

I really want to add dual exhaust headers & pipes and some kind of high velocity intake w/ 2bbl carb.

Would like to hear your thoughts!

Thanks,
John

Sounds great!

I really like the idea of keeping the original i6 in there, but see nothing wrong with a little optimization!

Thanks,
John

First thing get a 250 head off a Granada, bigger valves, more air flow. Go to ClassicInlines.com, you can get a cam and lifters and a 2-barrel adapter, dual exhaust headers. Run 2 1/2in exhaust with flow master 3 chamber mufflers. Run dura spark ignition, if you need a diagram on how to wire it I can help you out. pics follow
