5.0 in 1967 Coupe?

Hi all
Just wondering how hard it is to put a 1989 5.0 HO engine in a 67 coupe originally 289? Will it just bolt straight in? Can I throw away the efi and fit an Edelbrock intake and carb or similar? Will my C4 bolt straight up? Any hassles with mounts for original 289 power steering pump / accessorys etc? Also I want to lower the car 1 inch, with 17" rims whats the recomended offset/back space and tire size front/rear. Alot of questions but any info appreciated.
Thanks.

The 5.0 is easy to put in. It is easier to put a carb on then mess with the EFI, but you can get more horses with a EFI. I am not sure about all of the accessorys. Lowering the Mustang is easy, but the 17" rims are pushing it. I don't know the offsets you need.

It will bolt up, but don't throw away the EFI! Sent it to me!

Some of the later 5.0's had reversed the water pump inlet. I can't remember what year that started but I think the 89 is the same as the 289. Anyway you could just change the pump, the old style will bolt up.

Not sure about the brackets for power steering ect., but the worst case scenario you can swap the timing cover, water pump and basically use the whole front of the old motor. probably won't need to do that though.

The 89 might have a rear sump oil pan, won't work on your car.

I pulled this identical swap off on my 72 Maverick, although I retained the EFI system. If you're going to go to this much effort, enjoy the fruits of EFI! I ran the original C4 trans, but you will have to balance match the original C4 flexplate, as the later EFI 302s runa 50 oz. imbalance, The earlier 289s & 302s ran a 28 oz. inbalance. Additionally, if you run the EFI, the kick down cable will have to be fabricated. The only other issue would be the return line to the fuel tank. Ron Morris Performance has a sender to accomodate the return line. In fact Rom Morris has all the goodies to pull this entire swap off from the EFI harnesses to the fuel lines. A very knowlegeable guy who will answer any of your questions if you run into any snags. It's pretty straight up swap, if you have the harness and the ECU. You can check out my Maverick in the January '06 issue of Mustang & Fords. Ron Morris's contact info is: ron morris performance or 209-605-1590. Hope this helps.

Oh, one other consideration...If you are going to carburate a 5.0 EFI motor, there are inherent problems with driveability and idle quality. The reason is because they are roller motors and the cam profiles were not designed for carburetion. Though this can be overcome by selecting a different cam profile.

The current cam will work, but he will have driveability issues. So yes, he should replace the cam for optimum performance and driveability.
