289 Rebuild

I am about to start a rebuild on my 67 289, and am lookin for advice and ideas on what to do with it.

I want to keep it somewhat stock to hold some resell value, but want to push some power too.

is it worth it to just go all out and bore it to a 302, or stroke it? where should i look for parts like a new cam, piston rings, and full gasket sets, etc..? or if anywhere has a full kit to do it all.

Any help would be awesome,

thanks.
o, i've never done this before so any things to watch out for would be great too!

it doesn't match numbers with my car, mine was origanally a straight 6 with a 4 lug that a swapped to a 5 lug and this v-8 out of a parts car that had no title.

Bore it out no more then what you need to. Get 10 to 1 flat top pistons. Get harden rod bolts, alum intake, 289 small chamber heads and put chevy vavles in them, Holley 600cfm, headers, mild street cam and other smaller stuff. You can hide most of that.

The 289 and the 302 have the same 4" bore. the 302 is a mildly stroked 289.

Putting in a V8 will likely increase the value. Keeping a stock appearance won't change much in value.

Just build it the way you want it and enjoy. Save the old parts for the next guy if can store them.

Gas is going nowhere but up so keep that in mind if you go for high compression. Depends on if the car is a daily driver or fun mobile.

Summit Racing has good prices on parts and a good selection of stuff.

Don't buy parts until after you have the block and heads checked out.
Make sure you have the bucks for machine shop services first.

Decide what you want out of the motor and how you plan to drive the car before you spend a dime on performance parts.
If you really build the motor then you need a tranny and rear end to match. Tires are a must.
Ask these guys about your anticipated horsepower and tranny/gear requirements.

If you upgrade to 3.25 gears you get automatic more torque on the same motor.

If you have a motor that makes you go fast then you need good brakes to stop. 4 wheel drums and "jelly jar" master cylinder suck.

You WILL have to upgrade the front suspension. The original springs will NOT handle the extra weight of the V8.
