just aint right? cant be true? now what?

ok im new here and im really stumped. heres the story i have a 1972 ford mustang with either a 69 or 70 351w. but here is my problem i want to build the motor up but didnt really know what to get or where to start. u see my mustang was unreasonably fast for what i had done to it before i parked it. i got it in front of a junk yard so i dont know the owners. when i got it it already had headers on it but it had a 2v carb. ok so that all good and dandy but then i went and rebuilt the fmx tranny put a shift kit in it put a 3.50 lsd. crane cames ignition conversion, edelbrock streetmaster intake and a holley carb. all of a sudden this car was insanely fast. im not talking like some punk kid fast i mean beating motorcycles and pullin the front tires off of the ground when and if i could get the tires to hook up. runnin 3 second 0-60mph times and beating 11 second cars. i never got the chance to take it to get my 1/4 mile times checked but i raced may vehicles that run in the low 11s and i would cream them everytime i mean by alot like 10-15 car lenths when id go up to 120mph. i timed my 0-125mph before and it with a bad start was about 11 seconds. i know this all seems like hog wash and a bunch of BS but i swear it i never lost a race when it was running good. so my problem is what could possible been done to this car to do this. everybody tells me its not possible on my drivetrain and that the windsor block cant run like that but it did. and now i want it to be better than it was before but i am afraid of ruining it. what do you recomend i do. it has been sitting for about 3 years now and wont even spin the tires any more. i dont know what was done to it before but i need some help....PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

When you take it apart to rebuild it, you will know. What grade of gas did you have to run? When it was running good, did it run smooth?

Could have been boared and stroked to 418. And when you do that and and add the list of mods that you did, that would put you well into the 580-600 HP range easily. That is the only thing that i can think of that would make that much power from a naturally aspirated motor. But thats just my two cents.

i had to run 93 or 90 with octane boost or it just wouldnt run right. and it always had a pretty heavy lobe but i was told that it was normal for the 351s not to run smooth. wasnt sure if i was going to rebuild or not when i parked it i had the compression checked and the guy said it was still almost factory. he said it was at like 97psi and the factory for that motor was 105psi i know i need a new carb i warpped the jet block plate on it . so that is why it doesnt run good any more. and how will i find out what has been done when and if i rebuild it. i dont want to go and buy a bunch of parts to rebuild and then they not work. u know? and how do i decide what to put into it to make it better? is the only way to pull it apart first?

First what do you want to do with the car, and the most important...how much do you have to spend. You can do anything you want, it just takes money. I would suggest a stroker kit for it and an aggressive cam. I boared and stroked my 302 to a 347. All motor and it makes some real nice power. If you are about power adders, then dont get to big of a stroker kist, or you wont be able to put that much boost to it. If you make the cylinder walls to thin, you will crack the block.

well that is the thing i have as much money as it takes with out being raped if you know what i mean this is a hobby currently i am trying to restore it but puts some of the finer technologies that we have today into it. like power windows and locks, 5 or six speed tranny. great suspension that will give a good agressive look and a better response, LOTS of power how ever i decide to go, great brakes so i can stop all that power, rack and pinion steering so it steers great, basically a brand new sports car with a classic mustang look. where do i find this stuff? do they even make that kinda of stuff for my car? i would prefer kits so i dont have to really go hunting for all the little stupid stuff. but if i have to then i will just need to know where to start.

I got what your saying. here are some sites that i have seen some things that you are talkin about or to contact them:

http://www.mustangsplus.com
http://www.cal-mustang.com
http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/

This one i would call and see where they got all the Updated parts. they did the same thing that you want to do. they too the old look and put everything modern into it:

http://www.uniqueperformance.com/supersnakeGT500E.aspx
Take a look at the list of parts towards the bottom of the page.

Hope these help you out.

Rear Disc Brake Conversions kits from $700-$2400. I would do the front too.
http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCa...brake_conv.htm

power door lock conversion kits from $70-$235. 72 is the first year they put power lock and windows in the Mustang stock.

http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCa...door_locks.htm

Can't find a kit fir just the 1972 Mustang. I can find the motors. You might be able to see what you need to make yours into power windows. Here is a kit for any car so they say.
http://www.commandocaralarms.com/power-window-kit.asp

Can't find a rack and pinion steering kit for you or a kit for your 6 speed.

i would defff like it to look as factory as possible with the power locks and windowslet me know if you can get those parts. havent really decided how i want the interior. ideas would be great..... got to be set up for performance though. im guessing ill get some custom seats made for the car i havent been able to find racing seats for my car yet that would look some what stock. the 5 speed tranny swaps ive noticed none of them are for the 72 they are all for the 70 and prior. thes suspension kits dont really tell you if they are performance i want to rebuild the whole suspension. so its all new even though i just rebuilt it before i parked it. so i just want the whole kit every peice that goes to it. that one site that you gave me need 4steed was awesome they seem to deff have the most stuff for my car thanks so much for the links both of you now i just have to make sure its what i want before i spend the dough.well thanks for the help all of you any more info will deff help the process.

For the power windows and locks, you could goto a junkyard. I would look on the net or maybe ebay.

If you got to a junk yard and tell them what you want, they got a hot line they can put it on. There are Mustang junk yards. I think there is one in CO. Found some for you.

Does it look like a 302? If its a 351w, it will have the same setup as a 302 with the timing chain cover.

yes but they have different blocks and different power capabilities from 74 prior and 74 later. i guess the 74 prior blocks have much more metal and can handle more power.
