They don't come out easy to often. one of my tricks is I bolt the drum on backwards and hit it out with a dead blow hammer.

Did the 68s have c clips or were the axles held in by the backing plate? Either way, If it were c clips make sure they are out if its backing plates, make sure the entire brake backing plate is off. If all this is out, try turning the drum around as Fastback GT suggested or you can go down to your local Autozone and rent a slide hammer and attachment. That will surely do the trick.

Switching to disc I assume the breaks are off. but there are on c clips and the backing plates don't have to be off. The slide hammer would help.

The backing plates. The back of the houseing should be welded its not a chevy. as long as the 4 nuts are off the in side of the backing plats they will come out. you have to turn the hub and line up the hole in the hub with the 4 nuts and remove them one at a time and the axles wii come out.
