auto to 5speed swap advise please!

Hey gang,

Ive owned a 66 coupe with the straight six sprint 200 and the 3speed auto tranny since i was 15. Its a gutless wonder, but its also been my only car through highschool and university. I love it more than ive loved just about every woman ive ever been with.

So heres the situation. Im driving cross country with my baby in a few months, im sick of this girly 3speed auto that was invented around the time my dads balls dropped, and i want dearly to find a 5speed of some sort.

Theres zero chance im dropping 1500 bucks for a new tremec 5 speed that the usual sites like Mustangs-plus and California Mustang offer. This isnt a racing machine, its slower than a turd. the 200ci puts out like 100hp, it doesnt have to be a heavy duty racing tranny know what im sayin?

I want 5speed fun, and i want improved MPG, and thats it. So what options are available to me? Can i go to the junkyard and find some toyota or suburu 5speed for 400bucks then fabricate all the other junk to stick it in correctly or what? Is there a specific style of 5speed i should be looking for regardless of make? I have zero knowledge about transplanting transmissions and transmission swapability!!

Any and all advise would be much appreciated, thanks so much for your time!

Bevan

nice, wow alrighty a 92 fits right up there eh? Gonna check that out asap thanks so much!

and holy balls how the devil are you pushing 300hp from your i6? Like what mods have you put into it?

Also, im not pleased with the exhaust on my car, im interested in some sort of dual exhaust options and mufflers thatd make it sound very nice. Figured id ask now that ive run into another 66i owner! Do you run any sort of system with unique headers or whatnot?

Mmkay thanks again!

nice pics Brevil, whata badass lol.

So i emailed that cjponyparts.com about a kit for a i6 conversion and this is what the guy said:

"Unfortunately I am not aware of any 5 speed conversion parts that are
available for the 200 six cylinder. All of the bellhousings and adapters
and such are V8 only. Maybe there is a company that I am not aware of
that is making parts for that conversion. If you would find one please
let me know. Thank You"

Was it a different site ya found this kit at perhaps??

thanks again!

Nice ok. so thats the solution then right on.

So one last question before i start looking through junk/salvage yards.

you said your 92 5-speed bolted up just perfectly, is there a year range for 5speeds i should avoid? Or would just about any 5speed out of a mustang 1990+ gonna work with without any major expensive technical problems?

thanks again so much!

you can use the bellhousing and clutch@flywheel from a 66.the kit i used from cj pony is a t5ck3.there are a few odds and ends you will need, but most are junk yard parts.if anything else just yell.

Lots of performance related transmission supply places offer complete conversion setups for this very conversion. Check around, it's pretty commonly done.

If you can find one from a Mustang GT, I would get that one or a t-bird super coupe. It don't have to be a from a 92, but thats a good year.
