Control Arm relocation
i am considering relocating my control arms but i have heard that if you don it is necessary to get new ball joints or use spacers or you can damage the ball joints. has anyone tried this? do i have to modify the ball joints, i am thinking of a 1in drop

its a 68 v8 coupe, and i didnt mean a 1in drop in ride hight, just drop the upper control arms by 1in, which wouldn't change the ride hight

Why do you want to move the upper control arms? I say put a wishbone front end under it and take out the shock towers. Just joking, thats to much work, but I have seen it.

What he is talking about is commonly referred to as the Shelby control arm modification. It was used on the 65-66 GT350's but it can be done on all 65-70 Mustangs and Cougars. It amounts to re-drilling the mounting holes in the shock towers for the upper control arms 1" lower. This results in a drop of about 1/2" over stock ride height. This is done to get a better angle of tire contact during hard cornering. There is no need to replace ball joints or anything else but it works best when combined with other mods like a bigger front sway bar and stiffer springs. See page 181 of the 2007 Tony Branda catalog for complete info and instructions on how to perform this mod. <img>

BTW, you can buy templates from these guys to ensure that you get the holes located accurately.

I have read that you would be better off buying aftermarket control arms. I think if you drop the control arm, its hard on the ball joints.

It's only hard on the ball joints if you drop the mounting points more than 1". Like I said, Shelby did the 1" drop on the 65-66 GT350's. I don't think they would have done that as the standard setup if they knew it would be hard on the ball joints or any other suspension components. I have also read that this was a modification that was developed by Ford engineers and that Shelby just put it into practice.
