Best way to take care of a small rust spot in middle of the quarter panel

The spot is less then the size of a dime, however at eye level it is very annoying. It looks like something fell into the car and chipped the paint off and someone just neglected to touch it up and let it rust. Now the rust is not very bad, just surface rust. So I went to a auto body store today and picked up this spray on primer stuff that is supposed to "turn the rust to primer" that is if its not that bad which it is not.

My intents are to lightly sand the spot then tape off the whole car and spray this spot with that primer. What are some recomendations about doing the paint? In this picture you can see the spot right above the rear wheel, right smack in the middle of the quarter.

It's hard to tell from the photo how minor it is, if its really minor I'd use 400 or finer sandpaper and just get rid of all the rust and repaint. If it's beyond that you can really only sandblast (which doesn't seem to be worth it for the tiny spot) or chemically treat it... which seems to be what you want to do.

I don't personally know anyone whose used rust removal stuff that turns it into primer. I'd probably go for something that just gets rid of the rust, then touch it up. Talk to your mechanic, see if he knows anyone whose tried it/had good results.

Just cover it with body filler and call it good

no really don't do that.

I personally wouldn't use that spray. regardless of what it claims, you can't cover up rust and the only way to get rid of it, is to do just that...get rid of it. If it's truly surface rust, you can sand it down and spray some paint on it, but chances are, it'll come back. Eventually, it will have to be cut out. That's just the nature of the beast when you own a classic. My car is starting to have rust bubbles pop out in the normal Mustang places. That's why they are a full time job.

Yea, theres a spot on the bottom of the passenger side door that doesn't make it's self as obvious. I'm going to attempt sanding that down a bit and doing a touch up just for this show season. I have quite a few connections with painters and body shops though 4 off the top of my head. Got a good deal with the one guy on getting my riceburner painted.

I'm still trying to figure out why the vent or whatever you wanna call it on the side on the rear quarter is mounted like it is. I think if they had mounted it 180 degrees the other way it would have looked better.

I agree that I don't really trust sprays, but I believe what he's talking about is one of the chemical removal systems for rust. Some people have had really great luck with em from what I've heard. It doesn't cover it up, it chemically removes it.

unless you use sandpaper and a wirebrush? That would hurt.
