Fill The Gas Tank

i just recently purchased my first mustang its a 68 coupe with a 302 v8
and the first time i went to fill it up with gas i had some problems. i knew that the pump would not stay in the tube because the person i bought it from told me, but first of all the gas seemed to keep back flushing and spilling out onto the ground and then the pump kept popping off. could anyone please help me with this, any tips. just for the note the gas cap is in the back just under the trunk

Could your gas hose in trunk have a kink in it?

Different stations have different pumps. I have found about 3 stations around my house that I can easly use.

i don't know on your car but sometimes there is a bend in the pipe that is suposed to be there and when the gas goes in it doesn't flow through fast enough. this is true for my dads old jeep. EX: the kind of pipe structure i'm talking about is like the one directly underneath any sink in your house.

Ya, I've owned two 67 coupes and they both had that problem. I would back off the pump pressure so the fuel doesn't flow as fast. There's usually several notches in the fuel pump handles for different flow rates.

Add a vent somewhere on your filler tube. It will keep escaping air to push your fuel back out the filler neck.

I'd be careful about opening a whole between the gas tank and the trunk. Your trunk could fill with fumes from all the tank sloshing and if there's a spark for whatever reason...

don't just poke a hole in it. run a vent tube routed out of the trunk.

This is the best solution. I have to do this and all the classics around me do this. It cost nothing and isn't hard to do.
