you can make a 289 hit 400hp easily my friend, but it won't be a street machine..... RPM's are key!!! Someday I want to spend a ton of money on a 289, my plan would be this.

Dart block, trick flow heads, weber carbs and obv the best crank, rods and pistons money can buy..... Get that puppy to turn at 10,000+rpm's with 12.5:1 compression!!! That's how you get a 289 to make more than 400hp my friend.....

You won't have one that will last very many miles if you're twisting 10,000 RPMs.

As I said previously, horsepower doesn't blow up engines, RPMs do.

If you stroke your 302 with the build that I posted, the 331 be a Great Motor that will last. and can make 400hp and live. Good Luck,if you like to see some of my motors go to my site and watch the video's. I am not new to this quest of yours.

yeah this is true, but Shelby made his last in the 1960's, pretty sure an engine almost i dentical to the one i want to build was used on the daytona coupe, it spanked the ferrari's in the 24 hour lemans race in 1965 I believe...... If you can get one of them to hold up to 24 hours of balls to the wall racing i'm pretty sure it would last a while with good maintinance right?

BTW this would be a moonshine running car, no traffic to worry about at 2am and it's not like I'd be stopping right??? hahaha just kidding, well maybe I might need a side job if gas hit $4 a gallon!!!!!

The 289 is a great engine, and it's capable of turning some RPMs, but be sure to put a solid cam and lifters in it. There's nothing like the sound of a solid cammed engine wrapping up

Wait mustangone, are you saying that the 65 Daytona Coupe had a 390 engine?? or are you just showing the specs? Your wording is " The 1964 / 1965 Daytona coupe was a 390 hp@6750 rpm" so you just have me a little confused........ it was a 289, but i guess it only turned to 7000rpms...

lol, Vinyl... You make me laugh...

The build that I show you is the most you can get out of a 302, and drive it to school still, for under 3k.
Now if you really want to get over 400 hp all you have to do is spary it. 75hp shot would be fine on this build.

But with all good power, you will find the weaks links in your drive line.

We have alot of guys that are Looking for power on a budget.

This build Ive told you about is one that we have built 3 time now. For a little motor its alot of fun. I have this same build in my Lime Green 1965 Fastback Mustang. and it is a 347 Stroker. If you have drove a car with over 300 Real hp you will know that its alot of power for a car that dosnt have room for rear tires. My 65 have 245/45/17 on the rear of it and it just spins. With 347 Stroker cooling is a issue in a 1965/66 radator is just to small.

With the 331 the bore is only .30 over witch is the biggest you need to bore a 289/302 for a 65/66.

If you like you can pick my brain for anything else you need to know.

I just like for you to get what you like out of your car and know what all is involved in it befor you send your money.

Car Craft had a good article on getting 400 HP out of a stock cammed 302 by only adding Heads, Headers, And Rocker Arms.
