400hp 289?

ive always thought about doing this in the future. i have my org motor 289 and it would be badass to build the original engine for the car. i would like it to hit 3 goals. 1. close to 400hp crank 2. still fit in original position in the engine bay (no high rise stuff i don't want the hood modified) 3. for about $3000. could it be done n/a?

400hp N/A is going to big the largest hurdle. All of the others can be achieved. I'm not going to say you can't do it for $3,000 but it'll be tough, and it'll depend on what you can do yourself.

i can build it with the help of my dad because i built my 302. i just don't know anything about matching heads and cams stuff like that. ive read that AFR heads and a mild cam in a 302 can produce 400hp.

a good friend of mine had a 400hp 289 sitting in his garage for the longest time. and it was NA. he was going to throw it in a cobra kit car.

i can ask him what all was done to it if you want.

AFRs are great heads, but that knocks out more than half your budget...lol

Matching the H/C/I is key for making hte power. Jay Allen is second to none of designing cams. You'll pay about $400 for the cam, but it's the best $400 you'll spend. He builds cams for some of the top notch indy cars, NASCAR, and offshore powerboats. You won't be disappointed.

Yup. He works one on one with all his customers. You get what you pay for, and honestly, $400 isn't that high, and he's the best. you just need to know what you're going to do as fas as other mods, and then get in touch with him.

A buddy of mine when I was in the military had a 66 with a 289. He ran high 11's at the track with it. It was NA with no juice. I know he had a high rise intake, ported and polished 302 heads, holly 650 dp, and a cam. Not sure on the specs of the cam but it was not that wild. He also had headers and msd ignition on it. He also used the stock hood. It was a badass little 66. Very fun to drive and rape imports with. I know he did all the work himself including the porting and polishing. I would have to say your project is very feasible.

thats the thing tho. i want it to be a 289. small bore is ok because my block will probably need a 30 over but other than that i want the displacement at the original 289.

and thanks GTsetgo let me know what he says

can heads be too big? for example 165cc intake and a 185 cc intake from afr are only about $50 apart so why not go with the bigger 185? or even the 205 set
