Transmission Question

i have a 68 mustang with a 302 it is a automatic transmisson. the problem is i am not sure weather it is a 3 or 4 speed. when i am driving it only shifts through 3 speeds so i guess it would be a 3 speed , but i didnt think they made a 3 speed automatic in the 68 model. is there somthing wrong with my transmisson or is it really a 3 speed ?

Unless someone has upgraded to a late model overdrive tranny, it is a C4 which is a 3 speed auto. the C6 is its big brother, and also a 3 speed auto.

no, it's a standard 3 speed automatic trans. It is a very good trans and will take a lot of power if modded correctly.

My first car was a 66 mustang. I still have it. When i got it, i had to rebuild the entire tranny, which is a c4. I installed a shift kit. Let me tell you, do it. If you are not familiar with trannys have someone do it. But the part itself is about 30 dollars (for a basic one). Find out what year your valve body is from thats what matters. The basic one should be fine, thats what i have, and it makes a world of difference in the firmness of shifting. To install it, you have to drop the pan, unscrew the valve body, take the valve body down, then open it up. Once inside the valve body you will be looking for check balls and "hockey pucks" The shift kit may require you to remove these but make sure you note where they came from (scrape a very light x into the valve body where it goes with a screwdriver). Then, you are going to remove the valves and replace the springs with the ones in the kit. All of this is explained in the directions that come with the kit. After all of this, there is an optional rod you can put in the pump. To install that rod you have to drop the transmission, remove the bellhousing, then remove the pump. After the pump is removed, open it up. Theres a spot for the rod to go. I do not recommend doing this precedure, because it is time costly and theres not much benefit, the kit will work fine without it. If you do decide to go along with it, get a new pump gasket, cause you probably will be needing one, and the existing gasket will probably be hard to remove. I had to spend a week solid, cleansing my pump in a solvent tank and hitting the gasket with a razor blade. Anyway when all is said and done, put the valve body back together, and be very careful when torquing the bolts. A useful technique is to hold the ratchet by the head and twist with your hand. Not very tight. You dont want to warp the aluminum valve body. Same when you remount it in the tranny. If you are not comfortable or sure doing this, take it to a transmission shop and have them do it. In any case i hope this helped.
