As far as I know the biggest you can go is a 351. Anything bigger the shock towers get in the way. I seen a guy that took those out, but I am sure it was a lot of work.

With the shock towers the biggest you can go is a 302.

You can fit a 351W. I did it a few years back. No problem. They make headers for it and everything.

Never did it, but 351w can fit. Can the 351C fit? I was thinking it could, but I am not really sure.

they'll both fit but the cleveland is a tight fit. As for the 460, there is a kit out there for this that removes the shock towers and converts it to a mustangII or pinto frt end. AS I remember it wasn't that expensive either.

Maybe its just me, but don't you think that a 460 is really overkill and to heavy for a little 65 Mustang?

I seen one with a 351C years ago. The guy said he had to do alot of modifying not just to the shock towers but to the steering as well because the steering link hit the oil pan.

I like the Mustang II frontend even if you are putting in a 289. The stock 65 Mustang frontend is a POS.

^amen to that. I need to switch mine out something bad. I feel every bump, filled in crack, crosswalk paint, pebble... I swear. I live in Az and above air conditioning the thing I miss most about driving newer cars is the ride quality. The steering wheel stays still unless YOU move it, now my hands and arms are just used to the back and forth motions.

ive heard the mustang 2 kit has its problems as well... it is a permanent modification and unless your an expert welder you will have problems with weld failures etc.
why do you want to put such a big engine in a early year mustang? if your intention is to just do burnies etc than go for it... otherwise it will handle bad and the front end will plow. even though the 351 will fit just try changing spark plugs. IMHO its all about power to weight ratio and a balanced car... a hopped up 302 with about 350-400 hp will be mighty fast and will also handle well esp with all the aftermarket suspension goodies you can get for these cars.

I had a 351W in my 65 and changing plugs wasn't an issue at all. I've had a harder time changing plugs in a stock 1973 Pontiac LeMans.

I am still in the mind set that if you can't get it out of a small block, you don't neeed it.

Now that WILL fit in a 67. 428 Cobra Jet with a 4 speed would be nice!

I know this is an old thread but a 460 will fit into a 65/66 without major surgery. You do need to shave the shock towers a little bit but not much. I actually hve a picture of a 460 in a 65 but can't post URLs because I'm still a newby. I have a 351w in my 66 and it slipped in without any problems. A friend of mine has a 351c in his 65 and didn't have to shave the shack towers or modify anything. I'm currently installing a 408Clevor into my 66. Its a stroked 351w with 351C heads. This is major surgery. Shock towers shaves about 3" back. I made my own headers. I also lowed the engine 1" and moved it back 1/2".

For the Mustang II suspension, its nice but not worth it for the little gains you get for that price. I've seen a 65 with MII kit installed that had a 289 in it. The engine compartment looked naked. There was so much space under there it just didn't look right. I'll take some pics next time I see it at the car shows.
