302 is a small block

Simple difference between the two.......small blocks have small bores and small valves and small outer dimensions. Big blocks are the opposite.

In some cases it the size of the block, like the 400.

A short block is for the most part a motor with no heads, a long block is with heads. It could be a big block or a small block. That how motors are sold new.

Yeah, thats what i was going to say. However, with japanese engines a short block is an engine and the long block is the engine transmission combo.

displacement is not always a tell-tell sign of small and big block

take the old 352 Ford...it is considered a big block in the FE family
