Sounds Like you have Valcuum Leaks Some were. Check Carb Base and all vacuum Ports.
On your timing issues your advance was working correct. you just dont start a 10 Deg you start close to TDC = Top Dead center, Then when it start running the advance moves the timing to 10 Deg. Good Luck |

Thats incorrect actually for a stock set-up (unilite). Ive been working on SBF for 30 years and this is a common misconception. There is no vacuum in the line from Advance unit to Carb at idle. The initial degree should be 10 or so like you said, and a total of around 30 or so. It does sound like you have a leak either in your advance unit itself, or the line/connections to-from the unit. It sounds like the diaphram in the adv canister may be split. Try a new one and see. Is your vacuum line hooked up to the correct vacuum port on the carb? That could be as well. Again, there should be no vacuum at idle, so use that port on the carb. Hope this helps.
