Question

toploader wide ratio, close ratio

Okay,

So I just picked up my toploader from being rebuilt, I have a 428cj as stated, and we picked up the toploader from a 390. The tranny is a wide ratio small in small out. While I understand it is technically NOT correct for my application, I can't really afford the 2500 for a big in big out short, close ratio. I have also been told that wide ratios are actually better for driving around town. SO RIDDLE ME THIS... and i should know it, but what is the difference and how does it work. I know the ratios and all that jazz, but i just cant seem to wrap my head around it and keep it around it.
Close Wide
1st gear 2.32 2.78

am I correct that the engine spins 2.32 times per 1 revolution of the transmission in the close ratio and 2.78 in the wide.

how does this help the daily driver?

2.32:1 means your engine is going to spin 1 time, and your transmission output will spin 2.32/2.78 times

i believe sooner stang had it it right. so 2.32:1 means the engine spins 2.32 times per 1 revolution of the output shaft on the tranny.

I did the math on it last night and it seems that zers is right. the transmission and the rear end are reducers. when doing the math, at 6500 RPM in 3rd gear, i would be going approx 107 mph. That was with a 3.50 rear end, and a 10" wide 60 series rear tire.

i did the math but lost my post, so here it goes again.

RPM/transmission gear ratio/rearend gear ratio=tire rotations/minute

TireRPM*circumfrence of tire in miles*60 minutes----> Miles per hour.

the bad news is that i will have to shift to 4th in a 1/4 mile.

the good news is that the wide ratio transmission has a higher mph/rpm in first gear. The engine will be in its powerband for a longer period.

if you keep your rear tires to about 27 inches it should make good power.
