New heads or rebuild for a 390?
My dad and I have decided to overhaul the engine in his 67 GTA and need to decide how to deal with it. Car used to be a consistant 2nd/3rd place show winner until the engine caught fire. Right now it gets 6-10mpg, leaks oil and in general needs an overhaul. The plan is to yank it, strip it, all new gaskets and somehow make it run unleaded fuel, it's this last part I need the help with. My brother in law suggested simply replacing the heads with new aluminum versions which seems like a simple solution BUT, will this effect the car's status for show? Will we need to get different cams? What are the downsides and cost. The other option is of course to have the old ones rebuilt with hardened valve seats, maybe shaved to raise compression. Just looking for some answers.

Rebuild your old heads, Your looking to add harden seats. That is what makes the head run well on the unleaded fuel we have now. Harden seats take higher heat of the no lead fuel.
You can have both heads Rebuilt for about $600. With the car being a S code it is worth alot more with the correct heads. |
