Engine will not keep running??

Engoine is a 289 with mild cam and Edelbrock 500 carb, after a mild engine compartment fire the engine was pulled to repaint the engine and engine compartment, i decided to replace the intake with a single 4 bbl tunnell ram and used the same carb, the wiring was all replaced and also a new set of hyd lifters, when i start the engine it will run for about 15 seconds and shut down, it seems to be loading up, sometimes it will puff back through the carb on the last gasp, sometimes it will start and run perfect for 15 sec and other times it will start and seem like it is on only a few cylinders, oil pressure is reading 50 lbs, float levels were checked and ok, engine ran fine before and i called Edelbrock to find out if the carb had to be rejetted for the tunnel ram and was told it was not necessary. any ideas??

Sounds like perhaps fuel or air problem. How did you put the fire out? I have a friend who put one out with a powder fire extinguisher and she had to clean the carb and intake to get the dust out of it. I would suspect anything with a low melting point (e.g. vacuum hoses etc.). Also, perhaps the filter...just a though.

Problem solved

finaly found the problem, after the fire i had to replace the coil and all i had was a Flamethrower coil for a Petronix ignition so i used it, the car i am working on has points type distributer and the high output coil was cooking the points, i installed a stock coil and new points and all is well, hope this helps someone else who might have the same problem down the road.
