solenoid problem?
My car keeps eating starter solenoids..kind of. I have a 6AL box which takes a signal from a post off the output side of the solenoid. After a few months, the solenoid fries. The car will still crank, but the post doesn't get hot to trigger the MSD box, so I get no fire.
I will just be driving down the road and the car quits, just like you turn the key off, and it will crank, but no fire. I test the solenoid post, and it won't be hot. I can beat on it, and it will work again for a while. This is the third solenoid, and they typically last 4-5 months, so I know something else is causing it. Is the 6AL just drawing too much power for the solenoid to handle and cooking them? Should I wire a relay into it?

How do you have yours wired?
![]() Wiring the MSD 6A Module With a MSD modules, the ignition module wires you need to know about are: tach signal is a yellow wire (do not use this to feed to pin #24 on MegaSquirt® EFI Controller, it is for a tachometer only), advance control signal is a white wire, ground is a heavy black wire, power is a heavy red wire, switched 12 volts is a thin red wire, the coil positive (+) wire is orange, the coil negative (-) wire is thin black, the unused VR signal wires are green and violet.

OK I have never posted pictures of any part of my engine bay because it's unfinished to say the least. Hopefully my winter project is pulling it, repainting, and rewiring it, because it's very ugly, but anyways......
The larger red wire is attatched to the hot side of the solenoid, and one of the small red wires is attatched to the trigger post on the solenoid. For some reason, I have 2 small red wires, and the other one is attatched to the other small post on the solenoid, and I have no idea what it does. This is how it had been wired when I bought it, so I just put it back like it was because I don't have any of the paperwork for the MSD stuff. ![]()

Do you know what the black wire is going to?
The Big red wire will be fine. The small red wire to the left is red/blue strip it is what trigger the car to start. The red wire that is atached to the brown wire is you 12+ switch wire. The Brown wire is the run side of your to the coil. The black wire under the brown wire I dont know what it is. Would like to know what that one is. We need to move the wires off the brown wire. Just let me know were that Black wire goes.

put the heavy red wire from your msd TO THE BATTERY DIRECTLY, it is switched elsewhere, try that FIRST... that, or try finding a heavy duty solonoid

If you notice the big red wire is the the Battary Directly. It is on a 2 guage wire to the Battary.
They do sell a better solenoid. I just think we need to get all the wires off the run side. |

Black wire is electric choke. The brown wire goes into the voltage regulator.....I think. I may need to run out there and look. The whole engine bay needs re-wired. I've just been putting it off because I hate doing that stuff, but it looks like it's time. I wired the rest of the car, and it's all good, but the engine bay is still......."rigged."

Everything works, but it's just burning the solenoid every couple of months. The car will crank, but there will be no power going to the 12+ post so there is no fire from the MSD.

I'm not working this week until Friday. I might try and make the drive up. I want to talk to you about your 427 builds and what I would like to do anyways.

Well, it as great meeting you Todd. Whenever that kid with the '70 wraps it around a telephone pole, if it doesn't tear up the engine, I've got first dibs on the good used one
![]() If anybody in htis area need any kind of work done, I highly reccomend MustangOne. He runs a first class place. I had a few of the same problems on the way home, but I got it here. It's still randomly loses power.

If I make it to the test and tune, I'll prbably lust drive my truck since I'm have some issues with the car, and I hate driving my car that far at night after what happened to the other one. These old cars headlights are like hanging maglights out the windows

All the kits I've seen for that are for every year, EXCEPT 69. The 69s have a different size light than all the other years.
