car dies while driving....HELP

Hey guys,
been on the board everyday looking and learning, but something has me stumped. I have a 67 stang coupe with a 347 stroker in it. I just put gurdles on it to give me some insurance because i planned on beating on it this summer. But now when driving, be it for 10 min or 25 min, doesnt matter if im getting on it, or just coasting, it will die at random times. It then will not start for 4 hours or 10 hours. But then when it wants to, it will start run fine, and then the same thing will happen again. I have noticed that the tach (autometer) will surge really fast to 8 000 RPM and then back down to what ever the motor is spinning at the time. the grounds are fine. This figure this out. Please help. THank you.

What ignition & distributer are you using.
Could be something loose in distributer or the ingnition box/coil is over heating.

I vote for coil over heating .

It is easy to check to see you have 12V on the green/red strip wire on the + side of the coil.

it should have 9-10 volts

12 volts will over heat the coil.

Do you have a MSD Box also? 6A, 6AL ? if not.

Did you check the voltage? at the coil ? Replacing the coil will not fix to many volts.

A simple test if you do not have a volt meter and adding a baslt resistor in line with the power wire to the coil.

Yours sounds like a fuel problem, Fuel filter, sending unit pick up or fuel pump.

Is your gas tank the original one?

yeah im pretty sure my gas tank is nice a filled with rust, cause the first time it happened the fuel filter was clogged with rust flakes...i think it ruined my fuel pump so that was gonna be the next thing i replaced, but i really do need to drop the tank and replace it too

I disconnected the tach and everything is perfect now. But i am going to drive it a few more days and make sure. It was cutting out after 15 min everytime. It was at different times. But i might have to wait a few more day or so because Gustav, or whats left of it, is dumping tons of rain on Joliet IL. I will keep everyone posted. I dont have access to a volt meter. Going to invest and check that out too. Thanks for all the help.

Well today i will find out for sure if the tach was the problem. I am going to a carshow in joliet IL and will be driving it a lot. If anyone is interested and close to joliet IL, come on by to a free carshow at babes hotdog. usually there are 50 cars or so. it meets every wed night untill the weather turnes too cold. if anyone can make it let me know at mmfield@automatedcentral.com And thanks for all the help.

well bad news. I still have the problem. I disconnected the tach and it still dies. I took the car to the show, went to start it up, and nothing. What happened this time was that it drove fine for ten miles. I turned it off and let it sit for about and hour. I tried to start it and it turned over but no firing. Could it be the electronic regulator? Im just trying to work on the cheapest parts first.

It sounds very similar to the problem I was having. It turned out to be my 6al box. I figured it out last week when there was smoke coming from the box . I replaced the box and have driven it a lot sonce then with no troubles.

Im new at this and learning as i go. Is the electronic regulator the same thing as the 6al? Or is that a newer version of the electronic regulator. The aluminum box that is mounted on the drivers side, right next to the radiator is what i am talking about. It has three prongs that plug into it. Is the 6al just a newer part? thank you

The aluminum box is the voltage regulator and Im not to knoledgeable about the MSD systems but I know its not called a 6al that would be the ingnition system upgrade. The aluminum box is factory and the 6AL is the MSD aftermarket kit.
