Is it going to be a DD?

If it is, depending on how much highway driving you do, a T5 upgrade would make it a lot more friendly. Mine is still a 4 speed, but I don't DD it, but I love my car for what it is, so not having overdrive doesn't bother me, although it does other people.

289s can make good power, but "serious power" might be a reach with any kind of driveability. If you buy it, just be preppared to sit and talk to gawkers for hours on end everytime you stop somewhere.

Check out every inch for cancer before you buy.

If you want a classic for the sole purpose of "power", stick with the 98.

No..... I would say with newer cars have more potential when it is a DD. How many old mustangs can you DD with 500+HP?

I had a 65 289. It got about 11-13 MPG. Keep that in mind.

Going fast is always expensive. Unless you are a good fabricator. You can always go with a junk yard build. Hot Rod magazine built a Chevette with a stock 502 in it for $2000 and it ran 12s.

Although the 289 is a great engine, it sounds like you need something a little bigger. The old saying, there is no replacement for displacement it absolutely true.

To get big numbers out of a 289, you're going to sacrafice driveability. If you can go with a big block, you're set

You could also go with the route MustangOne went, and stroke a smallblock to get the cubes. You can make a lot of useful torque with a stroker motor, and still be able to drive it.
