Rearend questions

I was wondering how do you tell if u have a 8 or a 9 inch rearend? I have a 289 with an automatic transmission if that is enough information to tell. Also I am wondering what would be a good ring and pinion gears to get. I want to be quick from stop light to stoplight and also be ok for daily driving. I have a c4 tranny without overdrive.

I believe 3:73's would be a nice upgrade for you.

Ford rear ends

A 3:25 gear would be the low side.

I use a 3:55 Gear 65 mph = 4000 RPM

A 3:73 would be to high for a 1 to 1 trans

If I had 3.73 that would put me around 4500 rpm at 65 mph right??? That seems very high.

yeah, but i think that is a little on the expensive side for someone just looking to change the gear ratio in their current rear. now, of course, if cost was no object, then he should upgrade his transmission...
