67 Speedo gear

Is there any way of telling if there is a speedo gear in the trans tailshaft without pulling it apart, trans was rebuit ( 4sp toploader ) cannot get the speedo to work, works fine with a drill but nothing when the cable is installed, should i be able to feel the trans gear with my finger? I thought maybe the rebuilder forgot the gear, and he is no longer with us so i cannot ask him.

Just remember if you use a C4 or a 3 speed gear in it, it will not work.

A 4 speeds gear teeth slant the other way. for being on the other side of the tail shaft.
