Rebuilt engine ticking

So I just had my 289 rebuilt about a year ago. Over the weekend I took my mustang for a drive. The engine only has about a 100 miles on it. While i was driving about 50mph all the sudden this ticking noise started. I started loosing power and it was running terrible. I pulled off the road and tried to figure out what it was. It sounds to me like its at the top of the engine. The thing I cant really figure out is that when you speed the engine up it doesnt speed the ticking noise up. I was wondering if someone knows what it is. I was thinking it is either a valve, rocker or pushrod.

it could be that but also check your injectors injectors make a ticking noise when they are bad, if its efi check the intake , check the valve spring,

oh it might also take a while for the valves to work in bc you might have sticky valves your you have to redo the heads

and did u do it yourself?

I had a local rebuild shop redo the engine for me. I really don't know too much about engines. Im not sure how tough it will be for me to fix whatever the problem is, but i hope it is not too bad.

I would say if it has a limited warranty then take it back to the shop and let them look at it.

Injectors? Is it a fuel injected engine?

If it doesn't speed up with RPMs, it's unlikely it's anything in the valvetrain.

The ticking and loss of power sounds as though a rocker may have come loose or a valve spring is weak. I have gone through these problems before so you will need to take it to the shop that rebuilt the engine or take the valve cover off and check it out.

I found what the ticking noise was. A rocker broke in half. I was wondering has anyone else had this problem? I have a friend that has a 67 with a 289 and he said that he broke 4 rocker armsand then finially put roller rockers on. The only thing different about my engine is that i put a cam in it. Could that be the reason that the rocker just snapped? O also the engine shop did not even know what was wrong with it by listening to it. It was a very strange sound so thats why it was hard to explain.

It could be that it was just a defective rocker arm. Did you change anything on the heads for the rocker arms? When i switched the push in studs to screw in studs for the rocker arms, I had valve spring problems in that i kept breaking them. What we found out later is that we need to mill down the heads slightly to accommodate the screw in studs. I never damaged my engine but we didnt know at the time.

Well I was correct when thinking it was a rocker arm or valve spring. When you have a power loss like that and a ticking in the top of the motor always look there first. If a valve spring is weak, the only thing you will notice is oil going everywhere. If it ever happens again, pull over immediately, and tow it home.
