I don't pity them one bit. Non-big three manufacturers are building better cars without organized labor, which is what drives up costs, among other things. Way too much overhead, and union member employees are paid way too much to do way too little work. They don't build cars...robots do...and they still pay them outrageously high wages. I don't think they should get any bailout money unless they make some serious cutbacks on employee perks and pay.

I'd never be a member of organized labor. I grew up close to the Norfolk Assembly Plant (Ford). Everyone I knew who worked there lived high on the hog, with exotic vacations, nice cars, fat houses, you name it. The only way to get a job there was if you knew someone high up on the food chain. When they closed the plant to re-tool for new truck models, all the employees who worked the assembly line were sent home for six months...WITH PAY!

Just imagine how much a new Mustang would cost if it weren't assembled by a union worker. Knock about half off the sticker price, and you'd be in the ball park. When F-150's were selling like hotcakes prior to the current model, Ford made a $15K profit off of each one (Lariat 4x4's, the most popular model). They made a raping on the large SUV's. If they were to cut unions out of the picture and pay employees the industry standard wage, they would not be in the mess they are in. That goes for all three.
