That *so* depends on your budget.

Cheap: '80s Toyotas/Hondas and to a lesser extent Nissans. CRX will be fuel economy king in this category, CRX HF gets 40+ mpg driven in anger.

$5k range: '90s Civics/Integras; '96-'00ish Subarus; Miatas, E30 BMWs, P71 Crown Vics.

I could go on, but I'd really need more information for what you're looking for! Do you care if it's rwd/fwd? What's "good on gas" 20mpg? 30mpg? better? What constitutes decent?

I'd get a P71 Crown Vic from a police auction, then. 2v 4.6 (though they didn't get the PI heads 'til at least '01), can be picked up for a song, and you should get 24mpg or so out of 'em.

Rwd corollas are way overpriced right now due to drift tax. You can get an SR5 for cheap, but the single cam motor is gutless unless you do a few things to it. Good news is you do those things, ramp up the timing, and put premium in it, and you'll get in the mid-30s, occasionally as high as 38mpg.

yeah... they're expensive... I found one for 2500

I could buy it, but meh... I'm really starting to drop the whole car modding idea.
