My car was in an accident... wtf?

At about 5-5:30am there was some knocking at the door, I open it and to my surprise it was a cop. She was so kind to let me know my car was involved in a small collision and needed verification that I was the owner and asked for my insurance and whatnot. WTF? I parked my car in the driveway, just the same as any other day, but it seemed to find its way on the other side of the street. What appears to have happened was I didn't pull the brake and it just rolled out. Sometimes I pull it, sometimes I don't if im on the phone, either way, the driveway isn't sloped back and the car has never moved before. Well I cooperate with the cop, put the car back where it goes and looked at the harm done. Cop said there was some paint transfer, but when I went out it was just rubbing off of the other car. It was just dirt or whatever from driving it the last few days. Almost lucky, but my car has a dent in the rear bumper, can probably just be popped out. I didn't invest a lot of time checking it out, it was cold, dark and somewhat windy so I figured it could wait. I really hope my car received minimal harm. It is possible that they have some harm to their paint, I didn't take my time to clean their car. If there was some minor harm, and they talk to my insurance, how will it count against me?

I am going to go fetch pics real quick... Fuck this cold.

Me

The dent I had seems to have fixed itself, but those two marks just off from the middle of the picture feel like creases. I can probably get the paint thing fixed, but that is probably not as easily fixed.

That sucks, but you got kinda lucky.

If I forget to pull my e-brake, I'll be fishing my car out of the living room across the street.

Always, always pull the parking brake. Always. Always.

Seriously, always.

On a side note, use your parking brake all the time

And yes, if any damage happened to their car and they call your insurance then you will be f'ed. And if they are anything like me, I would have been on the phone last night if there was so much as a scratch.

Does it matter what gear you put it in? I always put it in second because thats what a friend does and i just followed him.

If you put the parking brake on, and keep it in good working order, then putting it in gear doesn't matter unless you're parking on a hill.

In which case put it in 1st.

Anytime Ace.

Some will argue that different gears are better because of the different ratios, but really, if the parking brake is maintained and applied, and the car is in any gear, it ain't going anywhere.

You're correct, but anything can happen, and your parking brake can fail. Better safe than sorry.

Always apply the brake and throw her in gear.

Certainly anything is possible, although in 25+ years I have never seen or heard of a parking brake failing after it's been applied.

I'm sure it's happened at some point though.

i had that happened to me before. luckily my friends driveway isn't much of an incline i pulled in, had my wheels turned a little bit. the parking break was barely engaged and i rolled backwards. because the wheels were turned the car went right between my friends jeep and his step dads silverado. he came back inside and asked who the mustang was and i said me and he said well it rolled. i jumped out of my seat so fast

I have never seen it happen either. But that extra .5 seconds it takes to put it in gear gives me a big peace of mind.

I just have a habit of putting it in second (i think i saw alotta cars in 5.0 mustang and superfords sitting in second) and i wanted to be cool like them.. and the ebrake up, its just a habit. i don't want anything happening to my 3,000 dollar car.
