need computer help

i am trying to burn a dvd on my computer, but it just keeps saying that there is no cd int the drive. i have a dell deminsion 5100. is there a driver that i need to download or somthing. thanks.

thats because there ins't a cd in the drive. there is a dvd in the drive. you need a dvd burning software like DVDShrink.

cd-r (cd rom (only reads cd))
cd-rw (cd rom writer(reads and write to cd))

its just a dvd-r. so i have to get a dvd-rw. will it come with all the programs to load so that i can burn a dvd

You're talking about media and even then you are still incorrect.

CD-R = Compact Disk - Recordable. (means you can only burn the CD once)
CD-RW = Compact Disk - Recordable/Writable (means you can use that CD a few times)
DVD-R = Digital Versatile Disc - Recordable (same as CD-R)
DVD-RW = Digital Versatile Disc - Rewriteable (same as CD-RW)
DVD-R/RW DL = Digital Versatile Disc - Rewriteable Dual Layer (means you have twice as much space as a normal DVD)

If you want to burn DVD's and Dual Layer DVD's (DVD-R/RW DL);

This will do pretty much everything.

If you're just needing to burn cd's;

That will just burn CD's (CD-R and CD-RW)

If you have just a normal CD ROM (ROM stands for "Read Only Memory"), it will look something like this;

And you can't burn CDs with this.

no, you'll need to download programs like DVDShrink, DVD Decryptor, and/or AnyDVD to burn them successfully.

illegal? No such thing as an "illegal" program so long as it isn't some kind of virus or malicious software. The program itself is free, it's shareware.

hmmm... i must be misinformed then. i was under the impression that it is illegal since it will bypass copyright protection on dvds

the use of it to remove those copyrights is illegal, but the software itself is not.
