Difference in gas?
Hola everyone. I'm going to order a tuner/intake for my car. Which setting should I use for gas? It has 87 performance and 87 economy. Yes, I'm a noob, but I don't wanna eff anything up or make a wrong move.

Im not sure, ive never used a tuner before.. im guessing it depends on your mods but either way the economy tune will save you more gas.

Yeah I figured it would. I was just wondering cause I just ordered it and I'm submitting the info about my car and mods to the website and it asked what kind of gas I'll use. The choices are either 87 performance, 87 economy, 89 performance, 89 economy, etc... Didn't know which 87 to go with lol.

87 performance - faster, eats more gas
87 economy - gas saver cant you change it on your tuner though?

Lol Ya I think so. I did a little more research and it appears to be so. I haven't gotten it in the mail yet and I know nothing about them. Sorry for the dumb question and thanks for the response man.

+1. It does not make sense to have performance and economy tunes. You can do both in the same tune. economy for PT and performance for WOT. An 87 octane performance tune is not going to add much power if any.

I was wondering, where do you guys put your tuner? That would be sweet if there was a mount for it, but there's only a mount for the Livewire. Boo.

I noticed that the shift points and pressure were different at WOT with a "normal" canned tune vs. a "economy" canned tune.
I've also noticed that performance wasnt all that much better with a 93 tune vs the 87. In fact, I'd almost say at times the 87 canned "normal" tune was better than the high octane tune. Just my observation....never took it to a track to really confirm. |

+1. Don't dog on your car and you won't guzzle the gas. I have a 93 "performance" tune and get 21 MPG... about the same I got stock, and now I am forced to run up to 15% ethanol-added fuel (which decreased MPG 1.5-2 MPG on average for me.

So I should go to 93, eh? When I get my tuner I'll use up my 87 and then I'll tune it to 93 performance and try some of that and see how that pans out. Like I said, I don't really gas on it very often, so that shouldn't be a big concern.
And I should be getting my stuff in the mail soon. Got the order confirmation a few days ago and I live pretty close to that place. The thing is, I got hit by some dumb broad so I have to take my car into the shop to get some bodywork done. It'll be gone for about a week. If I get the parts before I take it in should I just wait until I get it back? Guess it really doesn't matter.

Rest assured that no matter what canned tune you use, you can't mess anything up. They are real carefull to keep them safe or they wouldnt be in business very long. SCT has a dyno up here in Longwood FL. They take alot of time to create the parameters they "can" or load into the handheld. Just make sure whatever you do, you match the octane level to the tune you are using. It is possible to create damage running a 93 tune with 87 gas.
When you make the switch, run as much as possible out of that tank. Run it until at least the low fuel light comes on. Even a small amount of 87 can change the octane level of high octane gas...especially if its cheap high octane. The whole point is to keep the gas from "pre-igniting". High test resists pre-ignition which I believe is a form of detonation and thats bad. Anyway, use the best brand you can in your area and make sure its not too diluted. Its safe. Before my LTs were on, I changed my tune almost weekly. Never had a problem due to the tune before my LT's. Have fun with it! |

So it's pretty safe to go from an 87 tune to 93 as long as I use up the 87 octane til the light blinks on?

I would say go as far as you can towards empty but DONT run out of gas because that causes more problems. Just make sure you run it down real good.

for one, the difference between the 87 performance and economy will be minimal, and "performance" at 87 is almost a laughable term to begin with. I'd suggest ditching one of those tunes and get a true performance tune at higher octane like 92 or 93 depending on your area. BP stations will usually have the highest available octane gas (besides race gas).
