429 cobra jet
So, my dad used his reenlistment bonus in 1969 to buy a brand new 1970 grand torino with a 429 cobra jet engine package. He loved the car to pieces and would tell stories all the time about it. One time my mom and him were coming to back to Alabama from visiting family in Louisana and my dad woke up to the engine screaming and my mom driving. He asked her wtf was going on as he noticed the blue lights behind them, way behind them, and my mom told him to stfu, she was only 2 miles from the state line!!!! No ticket that night!
I was born in October of 1972. I was 2 minutes from being born in that car at high speed. My dad actually passed the cop that was giving him the escort to the hospital when my mom told him to "pull over, were not gonna make it." He blew the head gasket out that night, and being a father of now 4 kids, he did not have the money to fix it and sold it. I always wanted to find one and restore it for him. I have wanted that for 20 years and have never found one with a 429 package for less than 10k that was actually restorable ( within my means). My dad, my best, friend died 10 years ago. I miss him to this day. Last night I found a 1971 Ford torino with a 429 cobra jet package for sale. 10 miles from my house. It even runs. The body is solid, except for some surface rust. I actually broke down in tears when I found out the guy is willing to sell it within my price range. I have never understood people who put dcals on their rear window that say "in memory of". But I do now. I plan on picking it up Monday as long as I can get off work to make it to the bank. I only have one picture of my dad's car, and it is the rear quarter panel with my brother standing in front of it. It's not alot to go on, But it will have to do. It will be a long term project that I hope to hide from my mother. She doesn't come around that much anyway, so that should not be too hard. My hope now is that one day she will call me complaining about her car breaking down and I can tell her " I'll bring one of mine over and take yours home to look at" Then show up with the beast and give her the keys. I plan on having their "handles" stenciled on the doors. My dad's was "reloader", my mom's was "kamikaze". There will also be a "In Memory of" decal on the back glass. I just wanted to post this up somewhere people would actuall understand a grown man of 36 crying like a baby as he runs his hand over an old rusty car. I'll post pics as I go along.

That's awesome. Your parents sound like they had a lot of fun in that car. It's going to be a great project. All the best man.
