HD gurus... question...

I've always figured I wouldn't waste my money on blu ray disks for old films like Bullitt... cause I figured if it wasn't filmed with HD cameras, then it wouldn't be in HD and would look basically the same as a regular dvd...

but I just realized something... movies like that were on actual film... which HD resolution (1080p) is about 1/16 the resolution of actual film...

so would this mean that old movies like that would be in just as good quality as new movies out?

I think I'm gonna have to go rent one and test this theory out...

The best way is to rent and try them. Most that are digitally re-mastered though will be at least 720p and way better than the original. The only thing that sucks is that they can't really do much for the sound. Although, it no worse than the original's, thats for sure.

they take the sound and run it through static filters and noise dampeners, then just relay the track on the disc and amplfy it.....

cleaning up and crystalizing sound is mad easy, easier then cleaning up a movie

Old movies like "bullitt" were filmed on Kodachrome, which has a somewhat narrow color band compared to modern film and HD-tv, so old films won't be able to take advantage of the full color depth potential of blu-ray however the resolution of the old films can be very high, given that the film was processed correctly and the camera used had good optics however 16x better than blu-ray is a little bit of an overstatement. but it is definitely Higher than 1080x1920. ( with the possible exception of grainy high speed films) in any case even the old films will take advantage of Hd resolutions. So yes it is worth it to get the blu-ray versions of old film.
