Help with picking a used car

So as the story goes... my little bro is going to need a car shortly, and my parents aren't going to make the same mistake they did when they bought me a v8 mustang

Anyways, what car(s) would you all recommend? Something "cool." I'm looking to help him (and convince the parents) get a cool (not at cool as the mustang haha) car. And hoping for input from people that might point out some good/bad things.

- will most likely be used and a price range of ~15k max
- doesn't have to be fast, but not insanely slow
