my computer is "home made" from parts bought at Frys I spent 375 dollars and its a pretty nice computer. Although I didn't have to buy my Video card, my boyfriend had a good one that he gave to me.

Building your own is much better than a retail pc.
Newegg has the best deals pretty much... you can try pricewatch.com as well. Pricewatch is a website that lists all online pc parts stores that sell a particular part you search for, and shows which site has it for less. If your computer is not too old, you may be able to use some parts out of it instead of buying new ones.

Ive been building and rebuilding my computer myself for the last 12 years. My advice is figure out what you want to do with your computer first, just like you would do with a car.
If all you want is internet/word porcessing and email an off the shelf computer is not a bad buy as long as the price is right. Shop around. However if you are into playing higher end video games or possibly graphics/video editing having a computer custom built by a smaller computer specific shop would be your best bet, tell them what you want to do and you should be laughing. Let me know what you end up doing. *edit* To build a computer the major parts you need are: Case (Cases are mostly personal preference find something you like.) Powersupply (This will be decided mostly by what you are going to be using your computer for. Higher end Vid Cards need better P/S) Motherboard (I run an Asus they make really good boards for all applications) VERY IMPORTANT READ YOUR MOTHERBOARD MANUAL COVER TO COVER IF YOU ARE DOING THIS YOURSELF Processor (I went with an Intel Dual-Core Processor, I find that recent AMD really dropped the ball.) Ram (Depending on what you are doing I would say you don't need any more than 4 gigs of ram.) Hard Drive (Again depending on what you are doing a HD with 300-500 Gigs should be enough.) Video card (Again depending on what you are looking for, your options here are ATI or Nvidia. I use Nvidia cards I always have but I will say this, I havent given any ATI cards a shot. My Nvidia 9600 gets me more than enough bang.) DVD Writer/Re-Writer (I use a pioneer. Read/Write speeds are great.) Other than that ask the local computer shops techs for advice.

Case - This is all opinion on what you want it to look like.
PSU - Sometimes they come with a case so just the specs for your case. Motherboard - Something by Intel since AMD is confused about what its doing right now as a company. Processor - Something that needs to match the processor slot on the mobo. Intel will be your best option here too. Harddrive - I like Western Digital. SATA is where it is at right now RAM - Corsair is by far the best make sure it matches the pin set from the mobo Video Card - Nvidia is the best no questions asked. if you do not do a lot of gaming shouldn't need anything huge. DVD-Drive - These are basically all the same.
