No unions = why Toyota and BMW assemble vehicles in the south and ship them to be sold overseas. BMW has been great to SC.

My understanding is the only way that'll happen is if the auto company in question is allowed to go under, thus negating any contractual obligations. The dilemma then becomes do you let the automakers go under, in the hopes that new manufacturers will spring up in their place? Or do you keep those companies propped up, so that the people they employ can keep their jobs?

I believe some firm would purchase up all the good assets as they reached the bottom. The worst thing that could happen is if we nationalized the industry to save it.

EXACTLY!

The president's of the auto companies were not thinking ahead when they signed the union agreement papers. Andrew Carnegie would just fire everyone when they tried to form unions, and guess what, plenty of people were lined up to take those jobs.

There is a time and place for unions, but those times are gone.

Yeah, last thing we need is another k-car generation. If the options become "National Motors Buerocrat-designed K-car" or "Sexy Korean Turbo RWD Coupe", who's seriously gonna buy the K-car?

Recession = reduction in GDP for 2 quarters.

GDP = Consumption + Investment + Government Purchases + Net Exports
Consumption is down.
Investment is down.
Net exports are down; in fact, imports are up since the goods are cheaper.

What is left? Gov't spending. Tell me how spending is not helping. As with any government, red tape is keeping the effects to a lag, but give it time. He is following economic theory.

It is what the spending is on that I do not agree with.

If we stop spending the economy tanks. And fast.

Have to spend - but spend wisely and conservatively. And that's just what you and I do.

I have yet to hear a single action plan for anything....it's all hot air at this point. Sounds great - but how....

A big problem I see is a large labor pool, but not a lot of labor to be done. The only solution is to reduce the working population, or to create a new industry. The economy only works so long as money is exchanging hands. Overly simplified, when I buy something, the manufacturer of that good is able to pay his employees, who can buy the product that the company I work for makes, and thus I can stay employed.

AB is right, the government needs to spend money to be able to help the economy get on the right track. But it should be spending it in ways that will help us get jobs, and have spending money to pump back into the economy.
I think its time to build another hoover dam.
