this is the reason i don't like donation threads. when people decided to send donations to you for your wife's hospital bill, it was because you NEEDED it, and i was unable to send you money due to my current financial situation. i don't NEED any donations from you guys. i might not be so reluctant to accept the money if i actually NEEDED it, but you guys are donating money to me for me to do something fun with, which IMO is pretty messed up. don't get me wrong, it's VERY nice of each of you to donate, but the guilt that i'd get out of it just isn't worth it to me, especially when i was unable to do so for you when you HAD to have it

i'm the kind of person who would rather give than receive any day, and it makes me feel like crap to accept money/gifts when it's not needed. it would seriously make me feel better knowing that you (or anybody else who offered to donate) kept your money for yourself, and i mean it when i say that. just thinking of doing something like this is a huge deal to me, so you've already done your part.

on a lighter note, next time i get into a heated internet argument with somebody, and i want to do something to them that will really make them feel like shit, i'll start a donation thread for them

I understand how hard it can be to take donations. Believe me.

How much harder do you think it is for a 39 year old man to have to accept help?

But I accept the kindness of others, because I know that down the road I will do my best to do something nice for someone.

Just like people have been telling me, Bubba, accept it. We are wanting to do this not because we feel sorry for you, but because you're a great young man going through a shitty thing. I know you'd probably say "Hey, I'm just an average dude."

Exactly. And so are we. This is what people do for each other. We try to lift each other up when we're down. I cannot accept help from people if I'm unable to pass it on down the road.

A donation is not always about financial need either. It's about trying to show a fellow human being that "Hey- we might not really know you. We might not ever meet. And I know you don't NEED this money, but it tugs at MY heart strings to hear you go through this, and I want to do this to show you that even though I'm a thousand miles away, I'm supporting you in your fight."

And one day down the road you will pay it forward.

At 39, Bubba, I've had a lot of help over the years. It's only been since I hit my 30's that I was able to start slowly giving back, even if it's a little here and a little there.

So look at it like this. You're not taking help from me.

You're giving it to me.

this past november when i was diagnosed, i found out that i was eligible for the make-a-wish foundation.. my social worker didn't give me the paperwork to fill out until january.. i filled out all the information, sent it in, then the board reviewed my wishes (they meet on the second wednesday of every month to review wishes and decide what they can and can't grant) and they turned down all three of my wishes, saying they couldn't do anything car related. since they only grant wishes for people under 18, and my 18th birthday is the day before their next board meeting, i don't have time to submit any alternate wishes
