I think the CAI works better on some cars than others. Like in my mustang, the stock set up pulls air from the fenderwell anyway. The only real gain (with an aftermarket CAI) is that it travels in a slightly shorter path and its less obstructed because the aftemarket stuff is smooth and not that "flexible tube stuff". On the other hand, I've had cars that the air was sucked in right from the engine bay so a CAI probably wouldve had more of an effect.
Whats the stock jeeper set up look like Tiller? Got a pic? |

Thats that crinkle rubber tubing stuff. I'd say a CAI would help. It would clean up the airpath. Probably get a mile or two more per gallon out of it. I see the filter box there, does it draw from the fenderwell?

Math time!
assuming 2 more miles per gallon. assuming you might drive 12,000 miles over the next year assuming the jeeper gets 15 miles per gallon and lastly, assuming the CAI would be $100 and gas is $2 a gallon. Its going to take you about 6 months to break even on the $100 CAI using the assumptions above. As far as performance go's.... I wouldnt expect to see much gain. However there is one other part of the equation... filter replacement cost. If you have to change the stock filter twice in that 6 months, depending on how much they are (probably $10 or so), you can figure on breaking even sooner. |

Tiller, I was looking at these. Unless you can find one that is boxed off or shrouded off from the under hood engine air, its not going to do you alot of good. I dont know how they can even call these "cold" air intakes. The only real benefit to these is the tubing and a larger filter surface area for a little better velocity and volume.
You might be best off getting the cheapest ebay CAI you can find just to get a little less restriction. These are expensive and I cant see how they'd benefit your setup much because the still feed from the engine bay. Volant Intake - Jeep Cherokee Cold Air Intake System - Volant Cold Air Intake Exposed Filter . |
