Hey man my wife said that if it was a coral snake that you should look out for another one. She said they hang out in two's. She is from Florida so I guess she know's more about them then me. Just a heads up.

Just let the cat kill it my cat kills copperheads and milksnakes all the time. if you want a good snake for a pet try getting a green snake or a garter snake (even though the garter bites). black snakes (rat snakes) are fairly peaceful snakes in my experience. as far as killing the snake make sure you get a really long stick and pin it behind the head before you make a move to kill it, chop the head completely off and dont touch it because if it is poisonous it can still poison you. bury the head or burn it. I used to handle snakes all the time, just make sure what you are dealing with cuz some people will do retarted things when it comes to snakes.

me and my dad caught a gartner snake on our driveway once.

it was agressive as hell. It kept lunching and biting at the stick we were poking it with. We got it into a plastic container and i took it to the ditch behind the neighborhood pool and opened the top a little and threw the box. The lid opened mid air and the snake flew out, landed in the ditch, and went into a tunnel by the stream of water down there.

I use to catch snakes all the time in the spring and summer. Since snakes are cold blooded I would take a black trash bag and lay it out on the ground and place a rock in each corner so it could crawl under the bag. The black trash bag will absorb heat yet still provide some darkness for the snake so it feels safe. And since you don't seem like the kind of person to grab it with your bare hands, I would recommend getting a little critter carrier (small plastic aquarium looking thing) so when you pull up the trash bag after leaving it in the sun you can place the tank on the snake and contain it. Then call your local pest control and have them take care of it. Better safe than sorry.
