As stupid as it sounds, unplug and replug in all the cables and the HD. My budies brand new Xbox360 had the 3 ring of death on first powerup, unplugged and plugged everything back in and it worked fine and has been working fine since...

Baring that, contact Microsoft...

Its a gen1 console, and its been cracked open and tinkered with many times. Its lived a great life. Time to let her go!

The only reason I bought it was for GTA 4, and I ended up using it as a DVD player mostly. Ill probably wait for the next GTA and buy one then.

Towel trick ftw! lol..

My cousin has a 360 that had the rrod.. someone gave it to him. He did the towel trick, tightened the heatsink screws and it is still working..

The problem is manufacturers arent using lead in solder anymore.. lead is 'not green' and it 'kills the three toed sloth.' Sure, taking lead out makes it "green," but it makes the contacts brittle as hell. As hot as the 360 gets, everything expands, then when you turn it off, it all cools and retracts, weakening the solder. Over time, the solder breaks. If it had lead, it would be softer and it could actually flex.

So whatever microsoft does to "solve" it is not actually correcting the problem, (lack of lead) but they are merely addressing a symptom.

Just fix it yourself. I ordered a kit that replaces both x-clamps on the heat sink. It included everything for I think $30 or so. It was an easy 30 minute fix. I did it on a launch console and it's working like new.

lol at the towel trick. if its already got 3 red rings your at where your at. id call mircrosoft actually. I bought mine second hand (from a person who prolly stole it) and the lady in india working for microsoft told me to reset the box by holding right trigger and y when turning it on. at the time i didnt have red rings, it just had no audio or visual. when resetting the box i got 3 red rings. i was gonna be real pissed at this lady but she then said since it had 3 rings it was 100% free. i got it back 8 days after sending it. not too bad.

side note: ever see that commercial for gamefly i think it is? where everyone is just yelling and crying at their tv's but you dont know what it is til the end? and people are throwing their stuff out the window an nonsense? to me thats the red ring yell. hilarious.
