So I am thinking...
I dont know too much about engines, and have never had the chance to mess with them because I have only owned one car at a time (need them working all the time for work/school). My idea, however, is at the end of summer I should have enough cash to buy a cheap crotch rocket. Do you guys think that would be a good stepping stone to messing with my v6? The biggest plus side is the small amount of space it would take (in an apartment now)

Start with something like lawnmower engines.

But lawnmowers are cheaper. And if you use some enginuity (sp?) that lawnmower engine can be just as fun to test. Both will teach you the basics of an internal combustion engine. 1 of them will be expensive the first time or 2 you really screw up.

Yes, but I figured a bike would be closer to a car because a lawnmower is just a blade stuck to the end of the crankshaft. |

Where's your imagination bro, how bout a go cart or mini bike? Engine experimentation would be alot cheaper and you could still ride or drive your work.

heres what you do. Sunday night about 8pm pull the car into a spot you can work on it. Put a lamp on the hood latch so you got some light. Pull the whole motor out. Now put it back together so you can get to work!! you'll learn that way!

i dunno, from what i can tell a bike is a helluva lot different than a car engine. its like basketball and baseball. please correct me if im wrong. i think the best thing to do is to buy an old car. get an old mustang! they are so amazingly easy to work on. there is not much to them as far as the engine is concerned. and it wont break your bank

Just go to a junkyard and buy some pos '86 Pontiac Grand Am or something with a real simple strait 4. My first car was a '86 Grand Am with a shot motor. I bought it for $500 when I was 15 and me and my dad pulled it apart and re-did everything. I learned a lot from that. Than, when I turned 16 I had a car already.
You could do something like that, and once you have it complete you could have a new junker/dailey driver and you could sell the sixxer and either get a nice bike (that you don't need to tear apart) or a GT or something you can have fun modding. |

Your basic wrenches, but there are A LOT of specialized tools that you are going to need if you plan on properly tearing down and putting together a 4-cycle motor (bike or car). Some of those tools can cost a lot of money, but a lot of places like O'Reily's and AutoZone rent them out.

I'm kinda confused...your looking at getting a bike so you can tear your car apart? What are you going to do on a bad weather day?

nope... tearing apart a motorcycle to learn about engines... and then if I had a motorcycle I would not have to have the car running all the time
