My wife and I were discussing her upcoming breast implants and I remember the scandal over silicon.

Well the scandal turned out to be a legally generated one, millions were paid out to try and reduce the scandal because there were so many people making claims that the companies feared the movement gaining legitimacy even though the silicone was not the problem. The companies ended up looking guilty by trying to suppress the discussion to keep business brisk, rather than take it head on and stomp out the ignorance. In the end, it turns out the silicon implants were not the problem, they are back on the market with no strings attached. However, for about 10 years, many mastectomy patients were not able to get silicon implants to replace their lost breast, and had to settle for saline (Don't get me wrong, saline are nice, they give porn stars that porn star look, but if your girlfriend or wife had silicon implants and didn't tell you, you probably woudn't ever know, they feel that natural). Surgeons were so afraid of being included in lawsuits that they wouldn't touch silicon. I know this because for about 8 years when I was a Surgical Technician doing nothing but cosmetic surgery (facelifts, breasts, tummy tucks, etc). The silicon implant scandal is a good example of where there is smoke, there is not always fire.

Another good example is the current anti vaccination movement. It has lots of believers but no basis, no evidence. It does have celebrity support from morons like Jenny McCarthy and John Carrey, and that idiot douche Oprah who gives them a platform on her show to speak from. Jenny McCarthy even feels that her alternative medicine techniques cured her child of autism caused by the vaccinations. In reality, autistic children do progress, but at a slower pace. She is perceiving her childs continued development as signs that he is cured.

By not getting vaccinated you reduce the "herd immunity" effect. Yes, your child may not catch anything despite not being vaccinated, but that's only because your child is surrounded by those who are vaccinated. But if a significant number of the population declined vaccinations, the disease would spread a lot faster. That's why Flu vaccines are pushed so much. They aren't just to prevent you from getting sick, they are to increase herd immunity so the virus can't take hold in a local population and find it's way to the immature immune systems of young people, or the tired systems of the old or chronically ill. Not everyone who contacts a disease contracts it, some just carry it around spreading to others while themselves being symptom from the entire time they have it.
