Rear end question
Is anyone familiar with the 97's mercury mountaineer? I know this specific one has a 302 and a 8.8 rear end. Would this rear end bolt right up to my mustang or would i have to make some changes in order to make it fit? And what size of gears are in those for that vehicle.

Not sure what gears, but I can just about guarantee you'll have to make some changes in the suspension pickup points to make it work under a Mustang.

Have you tried the tech section? If not there is alot of really good info there. Now if you did and still didn't find anything, read on. No it will not bolt right up. Even if it did the driveshaft would not as the Exploders have offset center sections. Which is why when the Fox Body guys do a 5-lug swap using Ranger/explorer/aerostar axles they take two axles from a certain side of the vehicle. Also they have different mounting setups than the mustang. On my Fox body I'm currently running a Fox Body housing (Turbo-coupe, continental, mark Vii's have the same length housings as the fox body's and sn-95 ((94-98 but I'm not sur on the 99+ housings)) housings) with the Mark Vii axles, disc brakes (front and Rear), calipers, and master cylinder. The S197 Wheels fit perfect on the rear when running this combination. The fronts need a spacer when using the Fox body V8 spindles and A-arms. Eventually I will upgrade to SN-95 Spindels and A-arms to bring the Fronts out more without the use of a spacer. Is there a specific reason your looking to upgrade to the 8.8? The reason I ask is if your not running some serious horsepower the 7.5 is just fine. I actually ran one in my car with no problems what-so-ever and I'm running a built 351W. Of course I was running street radials at the time so I couldn't hook up enough to do any real damage.

Basically it isn't worth the hassle trying to get it "Modded" to fit your car. But If I were you, i'd buy it alone just for the 31 Spline LS center section if it has it. You'd be better off buying the GT-40 Long block off of him if he's selling.
