The Infamous Canon vs. Nikon

So I'm *FINALLY* looking into a camera. I want to keep this simple. Besides choosing one on personal opinion which one is technically better? Or are they both the same. They seem pretty damn similar to me besides some small minor things I know nothing about. My dad will be buying a DSLR in the next few months but he has had Canon since the 70's and he won't buy anything else. I'm buying my own because he is very anal about letting people use his shit. So I want to know which one of these is the better choice. I've heard great things about both. Thanks!

~Lefty

Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera - Black - Rebel XS Black

OR

Nikon - 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera - Black - D60

neither is better than the other. its all about preference and which one feels more comfortable to you.

always been a big fan of canon personally. i guess its mainly due to always having used one though. the user interface is rather simple, and the camera's just plain work. that being said, i cannot personally compare them to nikon, as i have never owned a nikon dslr. the point and shoot nikon that i had was rather confusing to me, and just did not seem laid out very well imo. but i have never had one of thier dslr's.

^See that's how I am. I've used my dad's Canon film camera and loved it. I've never used a Nikon though so I don't have anything to compare it too.

neither brand is better than the other.
even if you compare a 6mp canon to a 10mp nikon (vice versa) you won't be able to tell any difference in quality unless you blow the image up. if you've grown up using canon i would suggest sticking w/ them. or you can go to a camera shop and mess around w/ each brand and see if you like one or the other more.

and some nikons have little features that canon doesn't (and again vice versa) but you won't be able to find a camera that has every feature that you want w/o paying a good amount of cash for.

I have used Nikons since the 70s. Back when Canon was just an upstart me too company. I have 4 Nikon Bodys and a lot of Nikkor glass. To late for me to go to Canon. But I don't want to.
That said, in my humble opinion. Canon tends to be first with the trendy developments. Nikon follows along a year or two behind. Although once Nikon releases their version its more refined and of higher quality and for the most part backwards compatiable. I am referring to their Pro Level gear. There is not much difference in their consumer grade products. They are both cheep looking to me. Since your Dad has owned Canon since the 70s, ask him how he felt when Canon Changed their lens mount thus making anyone with an investment in Canon glass replace it all when they wanted Canon's new body technology. But here is the larger picture as I see things. If you go with Nikon, you will not have access to your fathers Glass and flash accessories. If you go with Canon, I suppose you will. You may want to use his fancy fast zooms once in a while.

+1 Canon...I wouldn't get the dated XS though, I would get the newer XSi as it has a much better image sensor and already comes with a better lens off the bat that has Image Stabilization and slightly better glass. They actually have a Rebel above the XSi out already, the T1i but it is a little pricier and comes with the same lens as the XSi. The XSi can mount both EF and EF-S series lenses so there is a ton of good glass options out there for it and if you want to go to a bigger body down the road, the EF lenses transfer all the way up to the professional bodies and the EF-S transfer to any cropped body.

Check out this website, has great reviews and pictures from all the Canon bodies and lenses: Canon Digital SLR Camera & Lens Reviews

I'm gonna have to agree with this. I shoot Nikon because it feels better to me, but I'm sure I would be just as happy with the image quality of a Canon.

i love my nikon. never had a cannon. and thats how this thread will go. your best bet is go to best buy and play around with both and go with the one YOU like. either one has their ups and downs.

the XS replaced the Xsi ( I think, or was it the xti?I think it was the xti, but the xs did come after the xsi.). The XS comes with the same EXACT lens as the XSI.

I have the XS and I love it. It has a few less features than the xsi, but it is also cheaper.

Wait, the XS is better or the XSi is better? I've heard two different things in this thread
