Where is your dead lift on back day?
I do leg presses after squats also. It doesn't mean he's not doing them right. Also he's doing his back days the day after his legs. Deadlifts aren't necessary there. If he wants to do his back later on in the week I could see adding deadlifts but they are fairly interchangeable.

Im not saying your not doing them right, Im saying that if you hit squats hard then your legs will be smoked, and you wont have anything left for leg press.

For me personally squats beat me down but not enough, its the same as saying if you do bicep curls you shouldn't be able to do preacher curls. Quads, Glutes and Hamstrings are big muscle groups and should be hit hard. I do 4 exercises per muscle group generally. My leg exercises generally consist of squats, leg presses, leg extensions, stiff legged dead lifts, hamstring curls and calf raises.

if they don't beat you down enough then put some weight on bar. Your workout sounds like it's straight out of Muscle and Fitness.
I thought from reading your post you guys were trying to put on size, if you want to do that you need to hit the 3 cores and hit them hard.I have read somebody say they don't care how much weight they use they just care about doing the exersice correctly, well that's only half right. little weights make little muscles

my workout is not from muscle and fitness...i don't even read those magazines. I use plenty of weight, I just don't feel one exercise is enough to really target a muscle. I used to do a compound exercise workout I've gained plenty of weight and size from my current PRRS workout.

Also I was the one who said I'd rather work with a weight where I can truly target a muscle vs. using something heavy. You misread my post, I was referring to a weight where it was heavy enough where it would break the muscle down but where I could still keep proper form but not heavy enough where I look like a moron struggling with it. Little weight does not mean little muscles, it means less building of strength.

Guys who lift heavy push 4-6 reps and lift for strength. Look at Bill Stars 5x5 programs. They are proven strength workouts. Size is built in the kitchen though. The diet is much more reflective on growth than a workout

MLS your sig makes me laugh haha
I focus on strength training and use a 4x6 program, the the last set of squats I'll be barely able to hit #5 and 6, but after a 3 to 4 minute rest I can still do leg presses. Generally the point of not following up with more sets or reps of compounds isn't for the sake of just performing another exercise, it's because form and range of motion gets sloppy after doing so many reps of a heavy weight. Leg presses limit the amount of effort you have to put into form and balance, and just lets you focus on pushing that particular amount of weight.

He has me do weighted square after leg presses until I look like a quadrepelegic learning to walk again. I don't think it probably matters a lot what order you to them in. Just so long as you are pushing to failure each day.

OK, like my dad always told me, you can take a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. I tried.

Sometimes as you probably know it is good to change up the workouts. so in a couple weeks i may start with the leg press machine and then do squats that way my body does not get used to the same workout. or i could go heavy on squats and light on leg press and vise versa.

as for deadlifts i never ever do them. back in 1995 i deadlifted 315 for reps but in the process i popped a disk straight out of my back. At the time i was in the army and my lifting partner was a medic and popped it back in. I had that injury and every time i would try to add the deadlift i would end up not being able to move standup or sitdown without help for days.

Today i like the one arm row, machine row and i'm getting into lat pulldowns, pullups and assisted pullup machine. The one arnm row is my bread and butter excersise i just like how it pumps my back up and i can totally fell it working.

you and i could go back and forth about it all day. It just comes down to personal preference. I don't think 1 exercise is enough for that muscle group. Granted you can't use your max weight for both sets as it would lead to over training, but I think it's beneficial to use them both because the leg press is a 45 degree angle and your back is supported. It's more hips, quads, hams and calves. Those are big muscle groups that aid in building mass, the more you break them down, the more growth hormone/b12 your body releases.

your right we could go back and forth about it. I do leg press I just never mix them with squats. I also train for three lift power lifting meets. So breaking down each muscle group isn't a benifit to my sport.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not that strong, I lift to build size. I eat a lot and I do my splits and they've been working for me so I can't complain

Are they new to the midwest? It hasn't been that cold this year. Might be something to this global warming thing after all. The farmers are still harvesting! I've lived here my whole life - have NEVER seen them in the fields on December 1st - they were out there in full force last night. Mad rush to get the crops out. They were calling for snow showers this weekend. Not sure we'll see a white Christmas though...
