Not very savvy with cameras at all

But i am going on deployment soon, bahamas, and im sure i can take some good pics. Ill be working alot too of course, but i need a new camera i think. The olympus camera i got is old, 6 megapixel and has been acting up on my lately, guess the battery is bad.

Well i was thinking about getting a new one. Wanted a nice SLR for about 400-ish, but then dont know if i would use it as much, or if it would get ruined cuz id have it sometimes with me while i work.

Soo i saw the Nikon D40 at best buy and the NEX on base, would it be smart to get that. Or should i just get another point and shoot?

I saw this one and like it, but havent gotten to play with it that much.

Nikon - Coolpix 12.0-Megapixel Digital Camera - Black - S630

The price is good of course, just need thoughts on it. Theres plenty of threads on cameras, but mostly SLR. Thanks

D-SLR's are kind of hard to carry around.

With my point and shoot, I just toss it in my purse.

With my D-SLR I have a totally separate bag for it, I kind of have to plan on bringing it.

It depends on what you really want it for. If you want something that's easy to carry and easy to work with, I'd go with the point and shoot.

If you want the camera to go out, and take pictures stuff, kind of a planned out thing, Id go with the D-SLR.

In your case I would probably wait on the DSLR, as the point and shoot would be more convenient in your situation. A friend of mine has a 10 MP canon that takes really amazing photos for a Point and shoot, She got it over a year ago, so I am sure they have a 12 or more MP one out now.

Well, with the D-SLRs you can have different lenses to achieve different looks.

With a point and shoot you are kind of limited to one thing, although most point and shoots have really really good macros, I know mine does.

The pictures are comparable, IF you get a Good point and shoot.

There are also "SLR STYLE" point and shoots you can look into.

since your not an avid photographer, I'd say just stick with something in the point and shoot range. Look into some of the newer water and shock proof point and click cameras. There are several of them out there...

For the average user, most won't take advantage of SLR capabilities...all they care about is if the picture is clear and a decent amount of zoom. Start talking about things like f stop, iso etc...it goes straight over their head. As for the SLR style cameras...they are just a waste of money...why spend $400 for a hybrid camera when you could spend $500 for the real thing? Never really understood the point in them since they are also bulky cameras.

that link on the waterproof cameras is a bit difficult to navigate, but if you scroll to the bottom you'll see a spot that says actions...click on next to read the review of each camera.

I guess I should have asked this earlier....what is the end result you want with your pictures? There are so many variables when it comes to a camera...it gets down right crazy! If you just want something to push a button and make a decent picture then go the point and click route...but if you want portrait or long exposures you will need SLR.

Well see thats the thing, the point and shoot is more reasonable, but seeing more and more people on here with Slr cameras, and the quality of the pics, it makes me wanna get one. I want to go to these places on deployment, and take awesome pictures. Even if its only a couple times. I was thinking about buying one, and then just gettin a battery for my point and shoot i have no for the quick photos.

the D10? I like the idea of the shock proof/water proof cameras...why not have a rigid point and click camera? Yeah not as slim as other cameras, but not bulky like a SLR camera.

IMO, replace the battery on your current camera and learn how to do some of the custom settings while your down there. I'd be afraid to take my D60 to the Bahamas due to the damage that could happen from the sand. Get a few books and learn what all the different things mean, and after that (if you still have the passion to learn) go towards a more advanced camera. Believe it or not, your current camera might be able to take some pretty decent photos once you learn it. Megapixels is partially a marketing ploy...a 6 megapixel camera is more than enough for a decent 5 x 8 printed photo.

That camera is "body only"...in other words, it does not come with a lens...not worth the price since you will also have to purchase a lens.

I understand that. I dont know where my manual is for the camera tho. Im sure its online somewhere. Im thinking the camera might be bad itself too. I temporaly fixed it one time a while back, and hasnt bothered me since, til about 2 months ago. So if its not just the battery im gonna have to look into somethin else

Keep in mind that once you go down the SLR route, lenses are not cheap...this is my newest lens, and its no where near an expensive lens....
