Looking at getting an SLR camera
Looking at getting a nice, middle of the road SLR camera.
Passed the point of "aim and click" but still below the point of needing a $1000 camera. Would a used Rebel XTi be to an okay place to start?

all depends on what your used to. if your old camera is a cannon then stick with that. me personally i love my nikon d40. takes amazing pics and didnt break the bank.

i love my rebel XT. i would if your getting a good deal on the xti, then do it up. though i would have to agree with Dennis, if you have used canon, then stick to it, or likewise for nikon. can't go wrong either way imo.

I know some guys that take amazing pictures with the Nikon D50.
I just do a lot of film work, and have a Canon XL2. So naturally I lean towards Canon.

well, if its what you have been using, i would stick with it personally. my last two point and shoots were both canon's, so when i upgraded it was an easy choice. and i am glad i did because the interface was basically the same. i just need to learn the finer points of using more adjustments to really bring out my pics.

Yea, thats the thing, I want more control over the image. I found a gently used XTi + 18-55mm lens and 75-300mm lens for $550. Good deal?

I would pass if I were you. I paid $380 for a canon EOS 400D which is the exact same thing as an XTi. The camera had less than 3000 shutter clicks when I bought it, and looked brand new on the outside. It didn't come with a stock lens though, it came with a canon 50mm f/1.8 lens, a 1gb compact flash card, and a new battery charger.
