Fueling w/ Car On?

I pose a question and would like some opinions. Is fueling w/ the car on pose any more, less, or equal risk of starting a fire vs fueling w/ the car off?

I don't care about the legal aspect of it. I just want to know if there's an increased risk of fire if the car is on.

Its just as safe as with the car off IMO.

The gas has more of a chance of igniting (fumes) outside the car then going into the tank. I think.

If the gas in a car doesnt ignite until its in the motor, why would it blow up in the tank and go back up through the nozzle into the station?

no diff really as long as you dont spill on something hot lol the gas will not explode in your tank unless you have very low fuel and some spark gets in some how because if there is more gas than air the spark or flame will go out

I had to do it on a trip to NY from Alabama because my car was having starting problems. Come to find out it was just a loose cable to the starter. The only problem I had with filling the tank while the car was running was that the guage didn't read that I had gas right away.

I fill up my truck like that every time.... no need to shut it off.... and i really did it without any cares when I was filling up the front tank and was using the back tank, or opposite... now I only have 1 tank at the moment.

I am fully convinced there is no difference between having the car on vs car off. I've yet to hear any logical argument as to why it's more dangerous to fuel w/ the car on. I've been filling w/ the car on my entire life.

Yesterday I was filling my car like normal and a lady came up to me and told me that I need to turn my car off while fueling. I asked her why and she told me to keep it from exploding. I told her why there's no difference between on vs off and it's no more dangerous to have it on. She told me the pump said to turn the car off and there were statistics to prove it (yet, she couldn't tell me anything about these statistics). So, I got in my car and told her thanks for her concern.

Yeah some cars will throw code if the gas cap is not on or tight when the car is running. I always fill up with the car running, especially since all gas stations here are full service and I want to keep the air running...LOL

think of it this way. how many professional race car drivers turn off their engine when they pull in for a pit stop?

unless your car is arcing spark from the wires to anything but the plugs, and the fuel vapor is everywhere, i don't think its any more dangerous.

its not a big deal. actually smoking while pumping is not a big deal. the cherry on the cigarette does not get hot to light gas. you gotta have a direct flame or spark to light gas fumes.

only issue is a possible cel from the fuel cap being removed, but on the new edge i think it'd say check fuel cap first so there should be no problem.

I turn off my car to refuel....Simply because sitting there with the car on wasting gas while fueling up with more gas seems kinda like a contradiction to me

It takes more fuel to start the car than it does to let a car run for 5 minutes

source to this info? The Cobra starts up in less than a second, so i don't see how it can use that much gas

My Cobra sucks my gas away quick, so I like to keep it off when not running as much as possible....

I'm pretty sure it's if you leave it running for more then a minute, not 5 minutes.

also depends on the car too...

like the race car, it takes lots of fuel to get it started, enough to keep it running for about 5 minutes....

But I guess it would be closer to 2-3 minutes in a real car. I know that with my moms expedition, when I will leave it running for 5-10 minutes while going into a store or something it gets a MPG or so better per tank, than if I shut it off and re start it. That is also driving it the same way as I always do, very easy, since its not my car.

And with my diesel (i know completely different) that i would much rather let it idle for 10 minutes than have to start it even once. Its better on the engine too.

Reason why I dont like shutting the vehicles off, is the extra wear and tear that is caused from starting and engine, even a warm engine is higher than letting it run.
