Help with some math

Alright this crap is about to kill and I need a little help. Here is one of the problems.

1. Five more than the first number is 2 less than the second number. Also, 6 less than the first number is equal to ½ the second. Find the two numbers.

two equations

5+x=y-2
x-6=y/2

lets find x in first equation

5+x=y-2
x=y-7

plug "y-7" for x in second equation

x-6=y/2
y-7-6=y/2
y-13=y/2
2y-26=y
y-26=0
y=26

now plug 26 for y in the equation from before

x=y-7
x=26-7
x=19

final solutions

x=19, y=26

im good in math

I hate word problems
Alright here is another Ive tried but I think I set it up wrong.

11. During the 2003 NBA playoffs, the top-scoring player was Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. Bryan scored a total of 385 points during the playoffs. The number of free throws (each worth one point) he made was 11 more than three times the number of three point field goals he made. Bryant also made 26 fewer free throws than two-point field goals. How many free throws, two-point field goals, and three-point field goals did Kobe Bryant make during the 2003 playoffs?

I had x=free throws, y=two pointers and z=three pointers
Here are my equations

11+3z=x
26-x=y
x+2y+3z=385

2nd equation is wrong, it should be x-26=y

think of this way, 6 less than x. x=10.

6-10=-4 which is wrong
10-6=4 which is right

to rephrase it. number less than x means the number goes after x.

hope thats clear to you?

No, it should be x = y - 26

It comes from the statement that he hit 26 fewer free throws than 2 pointers. So, if he hit 30 two pointers then he only hit 4 free throws.

By your equation, if he hit 30 two pointers (y) then he hit 56 free throws (x).
